Enterprising cattlemen and women who are eager to strengthen their position in the beef business will assemble in Watertown, South Dakota, in September to hear from industry experts at the Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium, hosted by the Red Angus Association of America. The symposium is a one-day event that focuses on providing beef producers with the tools and knowledge they need to improve their management skills and take their farm or ranch to the next level of production and profitability.
This year’s symposium will center on staying “Ahead of the Curve” and will be held at the Watertown Event Center on Wednesday, Sept. 12. The event will feature a lineup of speakers that is sure to leave attendees enthusiastic about opportunities that lie ahead in the beef industry. Topics to be addressed include applying DNA technology to commercial cattle operations, important developments in the feeding industry, a producer panel and a live DNA sample collection demonstration, sponsored by Allflex and GeneSeek. Among others, the symposium will feature Stewart Bauck, Neogen, John Schroeder and Craig Uden, Darr Feedlot, Brian Bertelsen, U.S. Premium Beef, and updates from the RAAA Commercial Marketing Team.
Tom Brink, RAAA CEO, expressed his enthusiasm about the symposium’s speaker lineup, noting that the event is always a highlight of the National Red Angus Convention. “This year’s Commercial Cattlemen’s Symposium is expected to set attendance records and will be one of our best yet. Cattle producers won’t want to miss this group of speakers, and Red Angus camaraderie is second to none.”

Red Angus Foundation, Inc. Annual Auction

Not an empty seat will be found at the upcoming Red Angus Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) auction during the 65th annual National Red Angus Convention. The auction, which is a highlight of the convention, will be Sept. 12, 2018, at 7 p.m at the Redlin Art Center in beautiful Watertown, South Dakota. Many generous donations have been made to ensure high quality auction items for the block, however, the jewel of the evening is the “Pick of the Herd” package graciously donated by R.A. Brown Ranch of Throckmorton, Texas.
Buyer of the “Pick of the Herd” will have his or her choice from more than 350 females, including any heifer calf, bred heifer or mature cow, numerous nucleus donors and females in their fall sale offering. The package also includes 30 units of semen from Select Sires and 50 units of semen from Genex. Fifty percent of the proceeds of this outstanding sale will be given to the RAFI Research and Development Fund. This fund ensures RAFI will continue to finance research projects throughout the U.S. and continue RAAA’s longstanding tradition of providing universities with much needed research funding.
In addition to the “Pick of the Herd,” buyers will vie for several pieces of artwork including a framed photograph by Red Angus breeder Kelli Brown, an original pencil drawing, framed George Chiga and Sal Forbes quotes on cowhide, a Tim Cox painting and several other unique and valuable pieces.
