Sixteen consigners brought 20 Fancy Heifers to be shown and sold at the Classic. The Champion Fancy Heifer was Lot 16, consigned by Jake Robertson of Roca, Nebraska and sold to Reagan Ross of Callaway, Nebraska. The Reserve Champion Fancy Heifer was Lot 21, consigned by Double Z Cattle of Osceola, Nebraska and sold to Jaclyn Frey of Albion, Nebraska. The High Selling Fancy Heifer was Lot 16. The sale average was $2,180. Seventeen Prospect Steers were sold at the Classic from 13 consigners. The High Selling Prospect Steer was Lot 16, consigned by Apex Cattle of Dannebrog, Nebraska and sold to Malina Lindstrom of Elm Creek, Nebraska. The sale average was $2,189. There will be a class for the Prospect Steers during the junior show tomorrow.
The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic offers youth scholarship award opportunities through their steer and heifer sales. Youth that purchase a steer or heifer are eligible for over $8,250 in cash scholarships. The scholarship program consists of buying a steer or heifer, participating in a summer feedlot tour, completion of a simple record book on the animal and participating in an interview in December. First place in the Heifer Scholarship Division was Malina Lindstrom of Holdrege, Nebraska. Winning the Steer Scholarship Division was Karleigh Kleinknecht of Cozad, Nebraska.
Nearly 230 youth participated in the Showmanship competition at the Classic. There were three divisions youth could participate in, based on their age. These included Junior, Intermediate and Senior. The Champion Junior Showman was Abby Stallbaumer. The Reserve Champion Junior Showman was Ben Spencer. In the Intermediate division, Jace Stagemeyer was the Champion Showman and Cassidee Stratman was Reserve Champion. The Champion Senior Showman was Allee Maronde. The Reserve Champion Senior Showman was Isabelle Shultz.
The Premiere Heifer Selection consisted of heifers purchased at the 2017 Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. The Champion Premiere Heifer was shown by Hannah Robertson of Elsie, Nebraska. She bought the heifer on the Chianina Sale from Dethlefs Sisters Show Stock of Ravenna, Nebraska. The Reserve Champion Premiere Heifer was shown by Regan Ross of Callaway, Nebraska. She bought the heifer on the Fancy Heifer Sale from Jake Robertson of Roca, Nebraska.
The Supreme Row selection was full of high quality bulls and females. The 2017 Supreme Champion Bull was the Champion Gelbvieh/Balancer, consigned by J.J. Boehler of Orleans, Nebraska. The bull sold to Dave Strolberg of Axtell, Nebraska and Cedar Top Ranch of Stapleton, Nebraska. The 2017 Supreme Champion Female was the Champion Simmental, consigned by Ford Farms/Voss Ranch of Bruce, South Dakota and Felt Farms of Wayne, Nebraska. The female sold to Bill Muller of Miller, Nebraska.
The Colligate and 4-H/FFA Livestock Judging Contests attracted nearly 270 participates from six states. In the 4-H/FFA Senior Division, the Champion Team was Norris FFA and Reserve was Big Timber County. In the 4- H/FFA Junior Divison, the Champion Team was Box Butte County and Reserve was Buffalo County. In the Junior College Division, the Champion Team was Butler County Community College and Reserve was Hutchinson Community College. In the Senior College Division, the Champion Team was Kansas State University and Reserve was the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
